Dispatch No. 5 · October 2026
Dispatched 30 September 2026 · New releases for October
It's October, and the calendar has done its seasonal duty: horror by the armful and a paranormal romance for every lengthening night. The heavyweights turned up as well. Becky Chambers returns on the 13th with As You Wake, Break the Shell, her first book since 2022, in which a reclusive botanist and a pilot bonded to a living ship find their way to each other. In Nghi Vo's The Scarlet Ball (the 6th), a failed thief takes a missing heiress's place in Gilded Age New York, where the debutante season ends in demonic marriage. Alix E. Harrow, fresh from The Everlasting taking both the Hugo and the Locus, collects her short fiction in The Slantwise Histories on the 20th. It is an especially strong month for trans and nonbinary writers: Jane Schoenbrun's first novel, Public Access Afterworld, puts a trans content moderator on the trail of a pirate channel in the static; Hailey Piper, Annalee Newitz and Bitter Karella all have new books out; and Tenebrous Press gathers forty trans and gender-nonconforming contributors in Your Body Is a Fever Dream. And for anyone who wanted Holmes and Watson to simply be a couple, Oliver K. Langmead's The Killing of a Chestnut Tree opens a new series of cozy mysteries with the murder of a tree. Keep a light on.
